Rediscovering the Joy of a Point and Shoot Film Camera – Klasse S
I recently acquired a Fujifilm Klasse S, a compact 35mm point and shoot film camera with a 38mm f2.8 lens. For those curious about the difference versus the Klasse W model, the Klasse S features a 38mm f/2.8 lens while the Klasse W has a 28mm f/2.8 lens. This camera reminded me of the simple joy of using a straightforward, portable film camera.
The Klasse S is a basic but capable camera. It features a 38mm f2.8 lens, which provides a standard angle of view that suits my shooting style well. I wanted something simpler than my usual manual focus, interchangeable lens cameras like the Leica and Nikon. Sometimes I just want an easy, grab-and-go camera to capture moments without fussing over settings.
I took the Klasse S on trips to Zhuhai and Clockenflap, using it as an everyday camera. It’s extremely convenient but took some time to figure out—you have to hold the set and on/off buttons to access the custom settings and turn off the flash. The settings reset when you replace the battery, so you have to redo them.
Despite its simplicity, the Klasse S takes sharp, well-exposed images with a pleasing, balanced tone. The photos have a modern feel but lack the cold cast of some Fujifilm cameras. This little point and shoot really surprised and delighted me.
For a compact film camera, the Klasse S represents a good value, especially compared to cult classics like the Contax T2 and T3, which now sell for extraordinarily high prices. I’m enjoying using this camera and plan to take it out more often.
Have any of you used the Klasse S or similar point and shoot film cameras? Do you have any tips or insights to share? Let me know in the comments!
