Panoramas with the Hasselblad Xpan 2 and Horizon 202
Last year, Ivan came to visit Hong Kong, he is a talented photographer and YouTube creator who inspired me to pick up my video camera again after a long hiatus. His cinematic style and masterful pacing are unmatched in the YouTube world. Thanks to him, I’m now exploring the creative possibilities of video in a way I never have before. And while it’s proven to be more difficult than I anticipated, I’m up for the challenge – especially given my love of movies!
We met at the Quarry Bay MTR station and wandered the bustling streets, navigating between towering skyscrapers. I brought along my Hasselblad Xpan II camera and 30mm lens loaded with Reflx Lab 400D film, similar to CineStill 400D. If you’re interested in experimental film photography, I highly recommend giving it a try.
As we walked, we paid close attention to the details around us – the snippets of life on the street, the wares sold in little shops, the way the light fell at different angles. Visualising how a scene might translate to film is tricky but rewarding work. Ivan used his Horizon 202 to capture some street moments too.
While navigating the maze of streets in North Point, we discovered an array of distinctive features that reflect the unique character of Hong Kong. Taking time to appreciate the city’s intricate architecture and frenetic energy, you start to understand what makes its skyline so iconic.
The day proved inspiring and reinvigorated my passion for visual storytelling. Thanks to Ivan for motivating me to pick up my video camera again. Here’s to many more adventures discovering the cinematic wonder of this photogenic city.
