Lion Dance Tradition

Lion dance is a traditional Chinese performance art that is steeped in history and culture. It is a performance that is typically characterised by dancers dressed in lion costumes that mimic the movements and behaviours of the lion. In Hong Kong, lion dance is a popular and beloved tradition that is performed at many festivals and events throughout the year.

The origins of lion dance can be traced back to China, where it was believed to have originated as a form of performance to scare away evil spirits and bring good luck. The lion dance was originally performed during the Chinese New Year, but over time it has become a popular performance at many other festivals and events.

In Hong Kong, lion dance is often performed during the Chinese New Year, as well as at other festivals such as the Cheung Chau Bun Festival, where lion dance teams compete to see who can climb the highest on a tower of steamed buns. The lion dance is also performed at many other events such as weddings, business openings, and cultural festivals.

The lion dance is a highly choreographed performance that requires skill and training. The performers, known as lion dancers, wear a lion costume that consists of a head piece and a body suit. The head piece, which is worn by the lead dancer, is typically made from papier-mâché and is painted and decorated to look like a lion. The body suit, worn by the second dancer, is typically made from silk or satin and covers the entire body.

The lion dance is a performance that requires both physical skill and creativity. The dancers must be able to mimic the movements of a lion, such as walking on all fours, jumping, and turning. They must also be able to perform acrobatic moves such as flips and tumbles. The lion dance is also characterised by its bright and colourful costumes, as well as its lively music, which is usually played on traditional Chinese instruments such as drums and gongs.

I brought my Leica M10-P digital rangefinder camera and the Noctilux 50mm f1.0 E58 (Version 1) to capture lion dance before Chinese New Year. This was my first time shooting lion dance while also watching its performance at night! The whole experience was quite intense, as most of the people gathered in the front to try to catch the lettuce thrown out from the lion, meaning good luck. All of them were shot at their maximum aperture. I think I made a right choice with a 50mm lens, I don’t think I can get any closer with 35mm lens.
