Some travel with a detailed plan and specific places to visit, while others travel without a solid plan, just a framework. I fall into the latter category. I chose Tokyo as my destination because I needed a break after the Chinese New Year in Hong Kong. I wanted to escape the city life, but I was mistaken. Tokyo, especially during my first two days in Shinjuku, was too energetic for me. However, after a refreshing onsen experience in Kawaguchiko, I returned to Ginza. I was concerned that I would have the same overwhelming experience as in Shinjuku because I wanted something new and to go somewhere I hadn’t been before. That day, the weather was absolutely perfect. It was cold, around 5-8°C during the day. My wife and I left our hotel in Ginza and walked to Jinbocho. It was a random choice on Google Maps because I was looking for vinyl cafes and this one seemed like a good pick.

When I entered the cafe, “I Want to Hold Your Hand” by Grant Green was playing. I had my Leica MP and Leica Summilux 35mm f/1.4 ASPH 11874 lens with me. I struck up a conversation with the owner and learned that he had been to Hong Kong once in the 1970s when the airport was still at Kai Tak. I felt calm and relaxed in his cafe, savoring a pour-over coffee. Hayashi-san is a serious jazz collector. He was as enthusiastic about my dad’s vinyl collection as I was. The music selection was superb. At first, he was playing music on his CD player, but then he switched to the turntable, and even though I’m an amateur in the vinyl world, I could immediately tell the difference.

I shot a few frames inside the cafe with Reflx Lab 200T, the latest remjet removed color negative film from Reflx Lab. Many interesting people passed by the cafe too. I made friends with Ned in the cafe and learned that he is planning to get a decent film camera. I must return to this place the next time I’m in Tokyo and bring my Summilux 24mm, which would be perfect for this cozy spot. This cafe was my favorite place so far on the trip. I highly recommend checking it out.
