First Impressions on the Voigtlander APO-Ultron 90mm f/2 Lens with Leica M10M
Thanks to Simon, who lives in Japan, for helping me make a call to reserve the lens at Fujiya Camera in Tokyo. I felt truly pampered with his next-day hand-delivery to Hong Kong. Since acquiring the Voigtlander Nokton 75mm f/1.5, I haven’t used it extensively. There are two reasons: first, I think 75mm is not my ideal focal length as I still prefer my 50mm, and I’m looking for something more telephoto for my Leica M. After using the Summicron 90mm f/2 Pre-a, I found I still favoured the 90mm range because it is incredibly versatile for shooting in Hong Kong. It allows capturing detailed cityscapes without needing to get closer to subjects like the peeling paint and exposed pipes on buildings. Moreover, the 90mm offers a unique perspective that helps create clean, flat images, ideal for crafting abstract and artistic works that challenge my experimental instincts. I’ve always felt that 90mm, or my Nikon 105mm f/2.5 AIS, perfectly positions us as observers. You don’t need to immerse yourself in the scene; instead, you can study the space and pinpoint the details you want to capture.

Shooting in Hong Kong, where most residents are hypersensitive to cameras, can be challenging. It feels like they have sensors in their brains, instantly reacting when you invade their space with a 35mm or 28mm lens. A 90mm lens provides a safe distance for casual street photography, allowing you to include humans as compositional elements without intrusion.
This is not so much a review of the Voigtlander APO-Ultron 90mm f/2 lens but rather my initial impressions after unboxing and testing it at the flower market in Hong Kong with Stanton and Junio. We visited the market just before Chinese New Year, a time bustling with people buying flowers, tasting various foods, and purchasing Chinese zodiac-themed products. The lighting was incredibly complex, with each stall displaying its wares uniquely. Food stalls, with their intriguing smoke and harsh lighting, made photo opportunities challenging, particularly as I was still adjusting to the 90mm focal length. I opted to use the Leica M10 Monochrom since the colours were unappealing, and the higher ISO settings offered the flexibility to shoot anywhere from f/2 to f/8, allowing me to evaluate the lens’s sharpness.
The build quality of the lens is impressive. The silver finish exudes a premium feel, arguably the best I’ve experienced with Voigtlander. The focusing ring is smooth, and the aperture ring feels robust. Most importantly, the rangefinder coupling works seamlessly with my Leica M10-P and M10M. It definitely seems sharper at f/2 than I recall from my Summicron 90mm f/2 Pre-a. This lens was not sponsored—I purchased it out of curiosity and my fondness for the 90mm focal length, without wanting to invest heavily in an APO-Summicron. So far, I am very pleased and happy with its performance. It feels significantly better built than my Voigtlander Nokton 75mm, and the finishing is in a different class (perhaps because my Nokton 75mm is a black version?). I plan to continue using this lens and will bring it on my next trip to Fukuoka, Japan. Stay tuned!
