Do you always hunt for photos during your trips? Has your partner ever commented on this habit? I must confess this isn’t the first time Marisa has mentioned that I spend too much time looking for photos during our travels. So, I always keep two tips in mind: 1) Bring less gear to limit your options, and 2) Use something you don’t normally use.

Why these two points? Carrying less gear makes me travel light and minimises the temptation to switch equipment. With just one camera, you’re pushed to maximise its potential. You won’t feel compelled to switch to another camera just for a specific moment or effect. Secondly, using something you aren’t familiar with lowers your expectations for the photos, allowing you to focus on experimenting and capturing candid, casual moments. Most importantly, it helps you enjoy the time with your friends and family.

Shooting medium format is a distinct experience. You have fewer shots, so you tend to pick your scenes and compose more carefully than with 35mm. The viewfinder on the Rolleiflex 2.8F is straightforward to focus, although the image appears reversed, which requires some adjustment to your composition technique. Loading film is slow, but with practice, it becomes quicker. I use a Sekonic L-758 to take light readings, which slows down the process and provides a moment to contemplate the scene and decide if it’s worth capturing from a particular angle or if it’s better to move on.

Initially, I found shooting in square format challenging, as I mentioned in the video. However, with more practice, I find it easier to manage, yet it remains challenging because I don’t always want to centre my subjects.

I used some Kodak Portra 160 and 400 films. With abundant sunlight, I shot the Kodak 160 at ISO 100 and the 400 at ISO 320 to preserve more details. I dislike the look of underexposed Kodak Portra 400. Most of the time, I shot at f/8 or f/5.6, depending on the lighting and the depth of field I desired. However, occasionally, rapidly changing sunlight conditions required adjusting the exposure by plus or minus one stop or waiting for the clouds to clear before taking the shot.

The usual colour tone around the Guangdong area isn’t very vibrant. It’s green and somewhat reminiscent of Vietnam. I find Kodak Portra provides a neutral look that’s ideal in good sunlight. On overcast days, I switched to black and white film, which I still have a few rolls of at Photo Spectrum being processed!

In China, you can always encounter something unusual, like the way they launch new boats in the tourist area. The operators of the speedboats were tossing life saver rings to see who could make the best throw and even invited us to try.

The builder repairing the rooftop was so accommodating; he even asked which direction he should look to help me get a better shot.

The cave was so dark that I couldn’t take a photo inside. Legend has it that an emperor from one of the dynasties once hid in this cave and slept on the rock bed.

Focus on the scene, not just the photo. Photos are more than images; they revive our memories and bring them vividly back to life.
