A Journey into Vinyl: Rediscovering My Father’s Record Collection
Thousand Vinyls and Turnatable
When my father passed away, I inherited thousands of records that he had collected over the years. At first, I didn’t know what to do with them. I had always been more interested in photography than music, and I never really listened to his CDs or records when he was alive. But as time passed, I realized that these records were the only tangible link I had to my father’s existence.
Most of the records in his collection were classical music, which I knew very little about. I was a member of the orchestra in primary school, but that was a long time ago. So I started listening to some of the music on Spotify to get a sense of what was in his collection.
Before long, I knew I wanted to experience this music on vinyl. I didn’t know anything about turntables, so I started doing some research. I learned about the different types of turntables and the different components of a good sound system. And then I made my decision: I bought a Technics SL-1200MK7 turntable.
I had no idea what I was doing, but I decided to use some of my father’s cables and his bookshelf speakers. It was a mess of thick and heavy cables, but I eventually got everything connected. I also bought a Cambridge amplifier to help drive the sound.
When I finally put on a record and listened to the music through my father’s Rogers speakers, I was transported back in time. It was as if my father was in the room with me, sharing his love of this music. I started borrowing some of his vinyl and also bought some new ones from Analog Dept in Hong Kong.
Setting up my turntable and sound system has been a journey of discovery, both of the music and of my father’s passion for it. I’m so grateful to have this connection to him, and to be able to share his love of music in my own way.
