Atumi Design MP-TI – Turning the Leica MP into a Modern Classic

Atumi Design MP-TI – Turning the Leica MP into a Modern Classic

Camera Review

Recently Atumi Design sent me this modified Leica MP to have a look at. My dream Leica set has always been the Leica MP3 Black Paint and the MP Titan. This feels like the black version of the MP Titan. A London‑based design lab has recreated the key parts in titanium. Not only does it reduce the weight by over 100g, maybe that also means you can “spend” that extra 100g on a heavier lens. The nano anti‑fingerprint coating helps prevent marks on the camera, making it feel subtle, smooth and low‑profile in the hand.

I’m very particular about materials and details. Titanium has always been my favourite medium, and Grade 5 is definitely at the top of the chart. This MP feels very solid, but the black discreet finishing gives it a personalised character. It’s unique without shouting for attention. The nano coating gives it that matte, tactile surface that I like.

In total, there are 39 titanium parts: from the top plate to the bottom plate, dials and film advance lever. Even the lens mount is titanium. The nice part is that this is an essentially reversible conversion. They replace original parts with titanium ones, but they don’t butcher or permanently alter the camera itself, so you can keep your original parts and, in theory, go back if you ever want to. To have it fully modified, you’ll need to sacrifice the original leatherette, because they have to install the titanium strap lugs, which are attached directly to the camera chassis.

No matter what, my first priority is always having a Leica Black Paint body to get that nice brassing (you really have to use it A LOT), and the second one is probably something different. So now I kind of have to start looking for a cheaper Leica MP body and create one on my own. I know I’m a black‑paint person, and last year I picked up a silver MP and had the leatherette changed at the Arte Di Mano office in Seoul. I love it so much. Having only standard black and silver is still the safest option, but now there’s another path: a titanium look to upgrade your camera body and make it more personal.

This MP‑TI “Launch Edition” is also limited – only 50 sets worldwide. It’s not really for someone buying their first Leica. It’s more for people with an acquired taste, a special love for titanium that usually only shows up in rare limited editions.

If you’re interested in this camera send me an email. I’m happy to share more of my thoughts.

Comment below and let me know what you think, and what kind of finishing or style you would like to get on your Leica.
