Fujifilm Superia Premium 400

How did I discover this film?

Personally, I am interested to try all types of film and to see if their characters can fit with my style. I bought a pack of Superia Premium 400 in 2014 from Yodobashi camera in Tokyo after shooting a few rolls and I found that it is surprisingly good. I talked to several friends about it but they seem not knowing much about the character of it. So I would like to take this opportunity to share my own experience with it to all of you.

Overview

This is the “everyday” film that I have been using in different trips and daily snapshots in Hong Kong. It is only available in Japan but for details you can check it out on Yodobashi website. The character of this film is quite different from the “signature” Fujifilm taste and that is the one of the reasons why I didn’t untick it from my film list.

Colour and sharpness

It is a daylight negative film from Fujifilm at ISO speed of 400. People often relate this film with Fujifilm Xtra 400 but the colour from this film is quite distinct from it. Superia Premium has rich and vibrant colour well balanced with red and green as key colour mixing with little bit of orange tint in the shadows while cyan and blue is not its main focus but still creating a cooler tone; unlike Kodak Ektar 100 which has blue as the main colour with Magenta tint.

Generally speaking, it is not highly saturated comparing with the Kodak Ektar 100 and easier to use in various conditions. In the meantime, the contrast and saturation of this film is slightly high and the sharpness is still performing very well.

Why Superia Premium is my favourite film and how is it different from Xtra 400?

The only reason differentiating it from others is that, there is no typical greenish tint mixed with the yellowish feeling from Fuji films such as Xtra 400, which I dislike it so much when I do street or portrait and made my images look really unattractive, at the same time it is similar to Kodak’s warm tone (Kodak Super gold 400) but not overly done. Even under indoor environment, the images result is still great. So overall it is such a nice film for me to travel around with. Normally my habit is to bring 20 rolls of film for a 10 days journey, 3 of them are spare films in black and white for special occasions that I might be randomly got into some interesting places. Out of 20 rolls, there must be 5-6 rolls of Superia Premium inside my film holder.

Grain

It has nice grain structure at ISO speed of 400 and relatively smooth comparing with other film at 400 ISO, such as Kodak Super gold 400 and Xtra 400 both of them has coarser noise. The only competitor will be Fujifilm Pro 400H with finer grain performance (Pro400H relatively expensive and the colour is not my cup of tea).

Is Superia Premium 400 a film that you should try?

This is my favourite film so far; source it from one of your local camera shop and give it a try. I would recommend you to match it with any of the Leica lenses and it will be great combination! Price wise, I think it is much cheaper than Fujifilm Pro400H but more expensive than the Xtra 400. If you ask me which film do you recommend me to bring and use in South East Asian countries? The answer for sure is Superia Premium 400. The tone, image rendering and mood are perfectly matched with Asian countries and you can feel the vibe of the city from the image easily.

Kodak Ektar 100

Introducing you to another essential film manufactured by Kodak – Ektar 100 – which is still available in the market. This film is well known for its vibrant colour and its e fine grain.

Summary/Overview

Ektar 100 must not be a stranger to any film shooters; whether you are a specialist in street photography, landscape or portrait, you would love its extremely fine grain at ISO 100, and it goes perfectly well with old lenses or aspherical lenses.

Colour and Sharpness

Ektar 100 is a daylight balanced film, making it good at capturing exceptional saturation and vivid colours even at times when there is no strong sunlight. These characteristics allow Ektar 100 to stand out over films like Portra 400 (Fujifilm RDPIII ) or slide films (RVP100) which would give you greyish results instead.

With this exact reason, this is always one of my “must bring” films when I go travelling, in particular to places like Europe or South East Asia, home to some of the world’s most beautiful and colourful temples and architectures.

When you pair this film with Leica lenses, the colour red and blue tend to pop out stronger than others, and are also naturally sharper. However at a few occasions when I had the exposure 1/3 or 2/3 stop lower, there was a shade of purple tint at the dark areas.

Grain

Ektar 100 has outstanding fine grain structure, while other film types with low-ISO speed, such as Portra 160 and Fujifilm ISO100, have relatively higher grain structure than Ektar 100. So you can easily get a really nice result if you print it out.

Tips (Pushing the film?)

Despite all of the benefits with this film, the one thing I strongly recommend you not to do is to push the film to ISO 400 because  this will cause the purple tint to appear at dark areas, making it to look as if it has added this Lomography filter, and also the image will be in higher contrast with saturated colours. You can take a look at the pictures below shot with Leica M2 and Summilux 35mm f1.4 asph FLE 11663 at the Pettah Market in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The film was shot 2 stops faster, set at ISO 400 (I was shooting other films at ISO 400 and forgot to switch the meter to ISO 100).

Kodak Supergold 400 (Japan Version)

This is my first ever contribution of a film review post on this blog and I’d want to dedicate this special piece to a very unique analog film which unfortunately had been discounted by Kotack last November.

I am sure every photographer is set on a journey to search for the “right film” to shoot at different occasions, and to no surprise, I have been doing so for my street photography work in the past 7 years. During my holiday at Tokyo last year, I was finally able to visit Yodobashi Camera in Shinjuku, Japan, and got hold of a pack of Supergold 400 film .

Tone and Sharpness

It inherited the classic warm tone from the Kodak series and compared with its existing line-up, I would say its tone is somewhere  between Kodak Portra 400 and Ektar 100. Portra 400 has really nice skin tone for portraits but the colours are too pale for landscape or documentary; for Ektar 100, the colours are so nice and eye-catching but the shadow part (darker areas) are prone to purple tints if you use it under a low light environment. Supergold 400 gives the right balance of colours, it also shows good details at dark areas and the overall mood is good for street shots in South East Asia. The only thing that I would pick on is its relatively high colour sharpness.

Grain

I used this film during my trips to Sri Lanka and Cambodia, and both results have really surprised me. The tone was exactly what I had been looking for, and though the sharpness and grain were not as fine and sharp as the Kodak Ektar 100, the grain was still acceptable (not too grainy) and it had better resolution than Kodak Ultramax 400.

Having tried a good variety of negative films in the market, I felt like I have finally found my “true love” for daily snapshots. However the sad news was, I soon found out that the film had been discontinued, leaving me totally devastated as I have to go through this search and testing journey all over again. Despite this slight emotional ride, I am still a true believer that any passionate photographer should aim at trying as many films as they could in order to really identify what is actually right for them. So for now, I tend to mostly go for Ektar 100, Fuji Superia Premium 400 and Portra 400 as alternatives. (Simply because I thought this is one of the low graded film and ignored it).

In case you are interested, I have indicated which lens I used in particular in the photo caption, and for those who wonder why I picked Supergold 400, the reason is simple: the vibrant colours that this film gives off are always a true reflection of the actual subject we shoot.
